Damn this episode made me emotional LMAO. You just gotta love GOOD representation in fighting games. Fighting styles with culture behind them lead to fascinating character designs. Also sometimes it's cool to just see a character and be like "yo he me fr fr" My wife is Muslim and I showed her little brother a bunch of fighting games. When we were playing Tekken he saw Shaheen and got Hella excited 😂
Eddy was always one of my favourite tekken characters to begin with because Capoeira is cool as hell, but he cemented his place in my heart when I realised just how much he pissed off a good homie of mine
You killed me with "I'm not a coward!" 🤣 Good job at pronouncing those words. One thing that might have eluded you during your research: the acrobatic style is commonly known as "capoeira regional" because its creator added to capoeira and called it "luta regional baiana", or "regional fighting from Bahia." Of course there are those that say that it isn't the true capoeira, which is commonly referred to as "capoeira from Angola." So is it really Brazilian if in its name it says it's from Angola? I don't want to go down this rabbit hole, BELIEVE ME!
Man, that brings memories. My friend used to annihilate me in Tekken every time he picked Hwoarang until I discovered Eddy, putting me at an equal footing at the very least. There is some poetry in this, I think – a fighting style created to fight against oppressors helped me fight against someone who was better than me in a fighting game.
I know the vote is over and the next style is Muay Thai, I wish Taekwondo gets introduced maybe sometime in the future. I am a huge fan of Hwoarang and general representation of Taekwondo in fighting games, animations and cartoons.
I"m brazilian and that is the first video of your channel i have watched, it was a pretty cool video you got a new viewer! When i was younger i used to play tekken 3 with my father and he loves Eddy lmao. Pulpa Salgueiro from the rage of dragons is also a cool character.
Capoeira from Bust a Groove was probably my second character after Eddy Gordo for capoeira. in video games. There's a capoeira beat em up on Steam as well, but I find the movement very heavy and sluggish. Maybe one day it will be polished enough to warrant a feature in a video such as this
Currently reading a manga series called Batuque that revolves around Capoeira. I've always been a fan of the manga artist's style, with gritty fights, good research about its origins and historical figures (like Besouro Manganga) so if you have any interest in its history as well as a cool story (at least in my opinion), I urge you to take a look
This is how I was taught to say it when you’re having a hard time saying it. It’s a little closer than saying as it’s spelt. Maestro= Ma-estro Roda = hoda Queixada = keshada Bencao= Bensao Bananiera= bananìèra Au = A-oo But you pronounced them pretty well or relatively close. 👍🏼
Blanka actually practices Capoeria, but its hard to tell because he's a bit mutated, and his fighting style is not very unorthodox. Even in later games where he's basically a lighting bruiser, his moveset isn't very exaggerated even when compared to other capoeria practicioners in other games.
this is good! you did butcher the words, but I can see you put a lot of heart into the video, just one thing I have to clarify in terms of history, capoeira did not "start" in brazil, actually it started in angola, africa as a pure martial art, when the slaves came to brazil, they started using it as a way to defend themselves and it was then that it got the more dance-y atributes, to hide it as a way to pass the time, while secretly being training to fight the slavers thats why, if you see capoeiristas from brasil vs from angola, you'll see they have different "fighting stances", angolans fight with their limbs closer to the body, movements are a bit more rigid to ensure the enemy cant grab their legs Brazillians on the other hand, the style flows more, is quicker and the limbs are further away, because it evolved into the more dance elements brazil's is more risk/reward, you have more reach, but the enemy can get you easily too Angola's has less oportunities to hit, but it guarantees that if it hits then it'll deal a lot of damage great video! ^^
Having been lucky enough to have a Neo Geo, Bob Wilson from Real Bout 2 remains my favorite capoerista in a game. His moveset just flowed so well for me.
Fantastic video, but I feel the need to call out a point made. You mentioned that Breakdancing didn't have any of the historical context of Capoeira. While id argue it's true that it doesn't have as much. There is still a massive historical context, it's origins in the culture of hip hop and it's creation as a direct response to so many arts programs being cut out of low income minority in new York during the 60s and 70s cannot be understated.
My first intro to Capoeira was a movie that came out in 1993. Only the strong. Starred Mark Dacascos. He's done some pretty amazing stuff on the big screen but the movie was worth it for the fights alone.
I would definitely like to say that this video is leaving out the huge huge aspect of I think it's either 1994 between 1996 to the movie only the Strong which marked the caskets played a very important role in bringing capoeira to the screen as the movie only the Strong made a very important point about capoeira and I'm speaking in terms of Mark dacacos I know I said that name wrong but that's the best that I can pronounce it if you look this movie up and watch it you also understand that this movie only the Strong was very prominent to people who found out about capoeira
And not to mention everyone keeps calling it a Brazilian style but it was created in Brazil but it was created but Africans so technically it would be considered an African martial arts not a Brazilian martial arts because those who created it were African slaves in Brazil not Brazilian slaves in Brazil
