This video talks about the cost of fighting games and how deceiving it can be.
Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a “complete reconstruction of the franchise”, Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the “Wall Break” feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. “Limited Edition” and “Ultimate Edition” editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021.
Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2016. Similar to the previous games in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter V features a side-scrolling fighting gameplay system. The game also introduces the “V-Gauge”, which builds as the player receives attacks and adds three new skills. The game features 16 characters at launch, with four of them being new to the series. A story mode and 30 additional characters were added through updates and downloadable content.
Street Fighter IV is a 2008 fighting game published by Capcom, who also co-developed the game with Dimps. It was the first original main entry in the series since Street Fighter III in 1997, a hiatus of eleven years. The coin-operated arcade game version was released in Japan on July 18, 2008, with North American arcades importing the machines by August. The console versions for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were released in Japan on February 12, 2009, and were sold in North American stores as early as February 16, with a February 18 intended release date. Street Fighter IV received universal critical acclaim; receiving universally high scores from many gaming websites and magazines and it has often been cited as one of the greatest games of all time. It was followed by Super Street Fighter IV and Arcade Edition in 2010, 3D Edition in 2011, and Ultra Street Fighter IV in 2014. All versions of Street Fighter IV have sold over 9 million units across all platforms.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2.5D fighting game, developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Based on the Dragon Ball franchise, it was released for the PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, in most regions in January 2018, and in Japan the following month, and was released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch in September 2018. Versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are also in the works along with an update adding rollback netcode for these versions and Windows. Dragon Ball FighterZ involves the player picking a team of 3 playable characters and a unique assist for each, then fighting an AI or human opponent with their own team of 3 characters. The game received positive reviews from critics, with many citing the game as one of the best fighting games released in the eighth generation of video game consoles. The game’s fighting system, character roster, visuals, story mode, and music were all highly praised while its online functionality was criticized. The game was also a commercial success, having sold over 8 million copies worldwide as of 2021.
Tekken 7 (鉄拳7) is a fighting game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the seventh main and ninth overall installment in the Tekken series. Tekken 7 was released to arcades in March 2015. An updated arcade version, Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, was released in July 2016, and features expanded content including new stages, costumes, items and characters. The home versions released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows in June 2017 were based on Fated Retribution. Set shortly after the events of Tekken 6, the plot focuses on the events leading up to the final battle between martial artist Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya. Tekken 7 introduces several new elements to the fighting system such as Rage Arts and the Power Crush mechanic, making the game more beginner friendly than previous iterations in the series. Tekken 7 was a critical and commercial success, selling over 9 million copies as of June 2022. A sequel, Tekken 8, is in development.

15.04.2023Great Video
just ben
15.04.2023I bought tekken 7 originals edition thinking it had all dlc 💀
Also I find that the season pass for skullgirls being more expensive than the game itself (when they're both on sale) incredibly funny
BlackManta25
15.04.2023You should just be able to try out characters in training before buying them
Stressedin
15.04.2023Im fine with paying for fighting games, but having to pay ridiculous prices for character dlc is stupid to me, i should at least be able to practice or use them offline
TheChilledLiquidSoul
15.04.2023you know, it's ok to just wait for a ultimate edition of a fighting game
Jaden
15.04.2023at the very least a lot of these game go on sale all the time so if your interested in a fighting game you can always check how cheap it gets during a steam sale
SLORTY
15.04.2023For a fightcade player like me, the REAL COST is nothing and the games still hold up well to their modern equivilents.
JOSHUA KNOX
15.04.2023everytime a new fighter comes out i always wait for the ultimate edition which is a pain but because we all know there will be tons of dlc packs released between then…..it's a sad future and often the ultimate edition doesn't even net you the entire package 😡
Certified Trash
15.04.2023Personally I think the current model is fine, however an option to try dlc charicters via training mode would definitely make everything better, so you don't end up wasting your money on a charicter you don't even like
ArmoredGriffon
15.04.2023If I may provide a counterpoint for the sake of conversation. I know it can seem like they ship out an unfinished game and make you pay for the rest later (See Street Fighter X Tekken for perhaps the most egregious example, where they DID sell you a finished game, but locked half of it behind a paywall anyway), but it's important to compare it to what it used to be. First iterations of fighting games are always a bit bare-bones, but pre-internet any changes that had to be made and any additional characters they wished to add required a whole new release, and necessitated a whole new, full-price purchase if you wanted to keep up with the latest version. I much prefer being able to buy a game like Guilty Gear at launch and pay smaller intervals over the years as it grows and receives updates, rather than having to buy three different versions of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift at full price because there needed to be balance changes and to add a character or two.

15.04.2023Forgot the boss of all fighting game dlc, ARMS with everything free
kurt john palomaria
15.04.2023played MK Sf and tekken. cost a lot, online connection issues, lopsided matches made me permanently switch to Brawlhalla
DiamondBat Toons
10.04.2023Honestly, if it means that I don't have to worry about spending MORE money on some stupid battle pass or in-game currency, then I will happily spend $40-$60 for a full copy of a game. That's how it should be, I'm sick of this Microtransaction crap!
Ganime
10.04.2023Be hilarious
Everything is free except for the characters, pay for the ones you want.
Alternatively everything is free except for matches. Whether it's Arcade, Local, or Online: a payment has to be made to play the game.
Mystic Gengar
10.04.2023I DESPISE fighting game DLC. The only game I’ve ever bought a pass before playing a character in an open beta or something was smash ultimate because I was running tournaments and making content on it. Stuff like DBFZ I never buy the DLC for unless I know gonna like the character, like when I got Bridget after that strive crossplay test with the DLC unlocked. The numbers add up too fast in the cart, especially when you’re going back to older games.
Owen CMYK
10.04.2023I think free to play could be very very successful even for fighting games, I just think they aren't doing it right. Fighting game developers shouldn't be afraid to look to other game genres for inspiration.
For example, I have no doubt that Project L will sell you skins for your characters because that's what Riot does for all of their other games. But like… all modern arcsys games use 3D models so imagine if you could just get a custom Giovanna skin or something. I would pay for that, and it would avoid having to put characters behind a paywall.
If anime players are willing to pay $5 for a custom color, they'd sure as hell be willing to pay that much for bikini costume. And this could be extra lucrative if the colors and costumes were sold separately.

10.04.2023i bought dragon ball fighterZ while it and its 3 DLC passes are on discount. Spent $60, which makes it sound fair in my head but its kind of crazy how in a normal day i was expected to drop like what? $100? $120?
I didnt mind doing this for Smash Ultimate, buying the fighter pass 1 and 2 as soon as they were announced because thats a game i love and know will give me lots of mileage.
I'm semi-new to traditional fighters so i can only imagine what it's like to try and bring new players with a $100+ price tag.
Theyungcity23
10.04.2023You buy the game and then you buy the 1 or 2 characters that you're interested in. If you're short on money just wait until the base game is on sale.
And then youre making big assumptions. You don't have to buy every character. You don't need to have the character in training to learn how to fight against them. Training mode wasn't really a thing in the arcade days and still everyone played fine.
I'll never get the fgc's dedication to screwing themselves over. 99% of all things sold have the model of "the thing is made you buy the thing if the price is reasonable and you like it." That's the best. Subscriptions, grinding for tokens are significantly more exploitative.
MauMau01
10.04.2023Subscription based monetization model is like forced dlc. If i pay now i get to play it forever whereas with a subscription 1 to 4 months alright but over 5 years it starts adding up.
V
10.04.2023What do you mean when SFII came out you were getting all of SFII??? There are like a billion versions of SFII, and none of them were free upgrades, each new patch of SFII was basically a new game, or arcade board sometimes, someone had to buy. SFIV a more recent example, has Vanilla, Arcade, and Ultra, which were all essentially separate games, and the case was the same for Blazblue as well. Predatory practices in fighting games have always been the norm, it's not new.
LostWheat
10.04.2023Man someone's a juicer. Man getting a fighting game can be expensive but it's tough get it initial large player base or wait or sale or deluxe edition small player base
Jessica Carpenter
10.04.2023That's great! 🔥🔥🔥

09.04.2023Bro, when I had street fighter 2 i did not get all of street fighter 2. They came out with extended rosters and hyper and turbo versions. All I had was base sf2. you chose the worst example for an old game
love your content though, you just a lil goofy
Leon445 _
09.04.2023shoutout to melty blood type lumina for having all of its dlc characters free
Raging Tyga
09.04.2023This isn't entirely accurate though.
First off, how much one pays varies wildly FG to FG. Using the clickbait for example, if isn't necessary for you to buy all the DLC from DBFZ, You can simply buy the season passes and save nearly 10 bucks for every series of characters. Or, simply buy an ultimate edition of it includes all dlc
SolarSloan
09.04.2023I’m excited to see that some AAA fighting games are dropping from $60 to $50 and some are even switching to F2P formats (which typically come with their own issues). The DLC is where I get fucked up on prices.
F2P with a limited cast is personally how I think we could best combat the issue, and, it’ll make it easier to get more people into these kinds of games.
T3zlaGM
09.04.2023fighting games are the best, very expensive to get into sadly but boy does it hook u in so good
Nurdell
09.04.2023I think besides the free to play model, companies could sell games for very cheap but with very little content –
Like, 4 characters, arcade mode locked, only training, versus and online. That way they'll be having bigger numbers joining to sell dlcs to.
But I honestly think fighting game right now are amazing deals for time vs money standpoint.
Do It Mix Tho?
09.04.2023Melty Blood is def doing it best, Free Everything BB

09.04.2023(Before reading this keep in mind that i'm a casual Fg enjoyer that lives in Brazil)
Dlc's are the main motive to why i buy older and complete fighting games (like umvc3 and ggxrd) first instead of buying new FGs with tons of paid dlcs, because dlcs and season pass can cost just as much or more than a full and complete game like Elden Ring, Spider Man Miles Morales, Re4 Remake, and these games have waay more content than fighting games
But to be honest the only change i'd like to see to dlcs is letting you test and train against the new character and maybe give some free characters from time to time (like Kof Xv giving Rugal and Goentiz for free)
NateTheBad
09.04.2023I personally am fine with the current price point of fighting games, however there are definitely some improvements that could be had. More free weekends to help get new players to try, more sales once the game reaches 1-2 years old, DLC characters being training mode usable, and of course good netcode/crossplay being the bare minimum for a Triple A release.
Beanie The Burb
09.04.2023I think DLC is way better than the original model SF2 did. Releasing an entirely new game everytime they wanted to change/add something.
Isaiah Daniel
08.04.2023clickbait. marking ur vids as not interested.
Widdlebrik Gaming
08.04.2023It’s pretty funny that smash ultimate dlc costs more than the game itself
Kage
08.04.2023I see your points but I have to disagree, first I think it is a good idea to have dlc characters playable in training mode but I don't think that dlc is inherently bad because in different fighting games you can choose the characters you want to buy or get the season pass if you have the money and all of this dlc is content they are adding to the game instead of it already being their which can give more reasons to keep playing due to it adding more content to the game.
I think the free to play model can work for fighting games but it would have to be handled correctly because that would require constant updates to the game and monetization which have their own hurdles in game development which is why Multiverses is having trouble with but I would say a free demo for a fighting game can work better because a person can try the game out for free while playing online and if they like it, they can pay for the full version which makes it easier to get into fighting games while not having to use a strenuous live service model.

08.04.2023subscription sounds horrible, i will never play a fighting game with subscription, i never played a game with subscription i play on pc.
Sibusiso Langa
08.04.2023I'm perfectly fine with the current system on how you pay for things but I do have a SEVERE issue with the ridiculous pay to win aspect of DLC characters. Someone who was literally the WORST character in the previous game comes back with a DLC buff the gods would be jealous of. This in turn makes everyone want to buy and play them which decreases the chance of you having truly unique makes because the character you'll be facing MAJORITY of the time online is that DLC character. The subscription based option might be an interesting one I'd like to see it get explored in a new way though I used to have Xbox live as well before I made the switch to PC
Invertebrado
08.04.2023Multiversus is trying the free to play with a subscription formula and failing miserably. Fighting games are mainly played by 2 type of people: People that play competitively and like to grind and learn the intricacies of the game. Or people that plays fighting games casually with friends occasionally. Doing a f2p formula only works if you have something that really appeals to the casual that will only play the game once or twice, and always have something new to show to makes more casuals comeback
Trevor Eyre
08.04.2023"Why are you giving away your DLC for free?"
"Because we're dumb!"
-Yacht Club Games
CHRIS-X
08.04.2023I definitely wouldn’t have tried multiversus if it wasn’t free
Yeah Boyz
08.04.2023I mean if you can afford a pc or console it's fine, it's not like it pay to win or anything (but lot of time the dlc characters are way too good)i think dlc in fighting game will always be worth it (i'll never buy skin unless i really really like them)
007meef
08.04.2023Coming from other types of games and being broke, I can't afford fighting games most of the time. I can only buy one or two every year so I tend to buy the ones that have a large community around it (I'm pretty new so I only have GGST at the moment).
I want a f2p fighting game that's good cause I want my friends to get into FGs without paying a lot of money for a game that maybe they won't even like. And that's where I think project L will succeed where multiversus has failed.
Riot knows how to run F2P and they clearly can afford it. I put a lot of trust in the devs to make a great game and show the FGC that free to play is possible and can be successful
Michael Loewen
07.04.2023The thing steering me away from the subscription model you talked about is that, like you said, people are already paying to play their consoles. On top of Netflix (and the like), Crunchyroll (and the like), and shipping service subscriptions too, I personally don't think the subscription model has a place in gaming. Unless they could somehow just GIVE the game to people already paying for PS+ or Gamepass (which usually includes base games and not DLC content) I don't think this would fly. I can't be the only one who sees subscriptions as "losing access to the game if you aren't paying consistently for it". I'm okay with buying a game. I'm okay with buying the characters I'll play. I've never spent a ridiculous price on a game just because I ended up buying every character I knew I wouldn't be playing.
(Of course some set ups, tournament/party or otherwise, would need to own all characters in one place for everybody's convenience, but if so many people want to play on that set up, let them all pitch in to "buy" the set up together, and suddenly you've cut the price for each person significantly. I don't think any one person's game needs to own every DLC character, and there are plenty of ways to find out which ones you'd like to buy before you pull the trigger on any/all of them)
Valegator
07.04.2023Fun fact: all dlc characters in melty blood type lumina are free.
himzi
07.04.2023Just wait till it's on discount 😉 best way to buy any fighting game
Forbidden BoX
07.04.2023They also make it so that you don't notice how much money you are spending on their game. I'm happy that I've never spent real money on a game and I've played a lot of games(spoken by a true broke person)
Vinicius Alonso
07.04.2023I find that the dlc idea is too expensive and yet I’m not surprised, Iracing does the same thing but worse, monthly subscriptions and having to pay for most cars and tracks, and events as well to race other people, I just find absurd what game companies are doing nowadays because of their greedy
B0N3M4N
07.04.2023I think that having stuff like free weekends or friends passes for fighting games is something that might work extremely well with a formula good enough to sustain continuous development of DLCs and such.
For example, if Strive had a free weekend once every two weeks with all DLCs characters people could try DLCs before buying if they already own the game and have their friends get into it so they buy it in the future.
I feel like having a litte "loss" like that can make a lot in the long run for these kind of games that strive on an every growing community, just my two cents.
Fara Garoruga
07.04.2023That's why you wait for sales !
But yeah i gotta admit it's pretty dumb, bought GBFV and its DLCs for like 70$ something total and now you can get it all for like 20 :l
